On 7th March, 1915, the 4th Rifle Brigade of 80 Brigade, 27th Division, moved into trenches at St Eloi, just to the south of Ypres where they remained until relieved on 9th March. Over the past month the enemy had sapped down to within 25 yards of two of the trenches here and were able to bomb and snipe the British positions with far greater effect. As a consequence the battalion sustained a number of casualties including William Norris who died from wounds on 10th March. |
